Winter Jerseys

Richard Gardella lives in Rockland County, NY and he is getting ready for the cold weather, he wants to know which jersey we would recommend to keep him warm this winter.

Question:
Can someone recommend a warm winter jersey?

Thanks,
Rich.

Hi Richard.
If you want to stay warm it is best to wear lots of thin layers as this traps the warm air between them, keeping you warm and well insulated.

Always start with a good base layer, this should “wick” the sweat away from the body so that it will not go cold on the skin, which is uncomfortable and can cause colds and chills. Over this a short sleeved jersey and then a long sleeve jersey on top. If it is particularly cold then a thicker thermal or nylon fronted long sleeved jersey will keep the cold wind out. With anything that blocks out the wind or rain will need some ventilation to stop you sweating up underneath, this should be at the back and under the arms.

I would say all the well known clothing manufacturers make good quality jerseys for winter riding. Santini, Bio-Racer, Castelli, Assos and many others. If you look around you can also find cheaper, well made and workman like jerseys.

I’m sure our readers will suggest some more and make some recommendations……

I commute throughout the winter and stay warm and dry by wearing one or more wool tops. Rivendell sells some wonderfully cozy wool jerseys from Australia and New Zealand. Excellent, all-wool shirts are also available from Smart Wool and Ibex. The wool feels great when you put it on on a cold morning, it handles sweat beautifully, it doesn’t smell, and it’s a joy to wear.

In the cold winter months I use an Endura heavy weight long sleeve base layer under a Cannondale Slice Plus jacket.
The jacket is windproof but not waterproof but does a decent job in light rain.
