Rudy Project Windmax Helmet

Last week I was finally able to get my hands on a piece of apparel that I’ve been looking for to review since I read about its upcoming release in the market in few months ago: the Rudy Project’s Windmax helmet.

I’ve also got in the same box an nice pair of the bright Hypermask sunglasses, read the review here.

I reviewed the Rudy Project Kontact a couple of years ago. Since then I’ve been wearing the Kontact along the roads and tracks. I had one big crash. And Kontact kept as new. Should have I changed the helmet by a new one? Maybe.

But Kontact response was awesome…..however its time for the new one, it time fot the WindMax

Since Rudy sent me the Windmax to test, I’ve used it for several rides. Each of them amounting to several hours. Fortunately the weather was very nice, looking like an early spring day. And allowed me to really enjoy the time I spent on my bike and to concentrate on how the helmet felt while I was using them.

The Windmax is an light weight helmet (220g) designed for pro road cycling.

It seemed to me to be pretty solid and I enjoyed how compact it felt and looked. According to the manufacturer, it uses an In-Mold technology which injects Styrofoam into the mold creating a more resistant structure.

Rudy Project created it to be very comfortable and so the company has implemented ample padding in the inside of the helmet providing extra comfort and support to the whole head. Because the padding is made with an antiperspiration fabric, the padding never becomes bothersome due to excessive sweating. The helmet always felt comfortable at all times during the rides, even during the longer ones.

The Windmax comes with two pads that can be changed and washed.

The helmet is also very easy to adjust. It features a micrometric disk in the back of the head and it is very easy to use with one hand while riding the bike, which is always very useful if you feel the need to adjust the fit during a race. The disk is also very stable keeping the adjusted fit at all times and never budging.

It molds very well to the head  and for extra support and comfort, the helmet features a padded chin strap which is also pretty easy to adjust.

But the best of the Windmax helmet offers is its cooling system. The 21 vents keep your head cool at all times, increasing comfort and refreshing even under constant effort, such as in a climb. Though the helmet has yet to see the high summer temperatures, I believe this is one of the best ventilated helmets in the market.

It also features a protective net which reduces the flow of the air through the ventilation system, but it can be taken if you wish to use the full Windmax cooling experience.

Visors can be easily added to the Windmax:

The helmet comes in three different color patterns. Ours is the black, white and yellow fluo pattern, but there is also in red, white and black shiny, and another one in white, silver and shiny red.

I have only one thing to say against the Rudy Project’s Windmax helmet: its price. At e-Rudy.com, the official Rudy Project store, the Windmax helmet costs $299.99 which seems to me to be a little high.

Still the Windmax is a good helmet. Very comfortable and ventilated, this helmet will protect your head making you forget that you have an helmet on.
