Price or Quality?
“Should I spend more money on my bike equipment?” This is Rich Thompson’s question and its one we all ask when buying a new bike. We think he should get the best that he can afford and explain why.
Question:
Hello I am looking to purchase a new road bike. I am looking at either the Merida 903-18 (Shimano Tiagra)/904-20(Shimano 105) and 905-20 (Shimano Ultegra). Is it worth the difference in money from £819 – £999 – £1200. I am starting to get more into riding and looking to join a newly formed local club please can you help me. Many Thanks.
Hi Rich.
Personally I would buy the best that I can afford, which in this case would be the bike built with Shimano Ultegra. There are a few reasons why I say this and here they are:
Weight
Less for more; you pay more for less weight! The advantage of weight saving can be felt when climbing, but not so obvious on the flat and downhill. When climbing any weight saving is a bonus.
Quality
The more expensive equipment uses higher quality materials, although because it is also lighter the parts may not last as long as the cheaper parts, but will be better made.
Functionability
The higher quality equipment works better, the gear change is more precise and the bearings are of a higher quality and I would expect the tolerances on all parts to be more exact.
Style
Maybe not the highest on the list but quite important, I’m not saying some cyclists are snobs, but some may look down on the cheaper equipment and if you are new to the sport then you don’t want to stand out. The more expensive kit tends to be the more stylish, but this is all a personal thing.
Those are our reasons for spending all your money on better bike parts. If you can justify the expense then get the best. If you haven’t got the cash then go for what you can afford. If money is a problem then get the best frame that you can and then you can up-grade the equipment as you wear the cheaper stuff out.
