Giant Defy 1 2010 on sale

Arun Ramdin has seen a good deal at his local store, the Giant Defy 1 at a knock down price. His question is; would it be a bad idea to buy a bike with a Shimano Tiagra group set as he thinks it will be obsolete soon, we put him mind at rest.

Question: Hi!

I am new to road bikes and I saw a sale in a store so I thought that
this is the perfect moment to buy a bike!
So I saw Defy 3′s but they are all sold out and as a result I decided
to go for a Giant Defy 1 (Shimano Tiagra) at $1000 AUD (normal price
is $1500).

However, I have been reading articles here about Shimano Tiagra gears
and apparently it will be obsolete soon. And now I am really
confused!

Should I buy the Defy 1 on sale with a Tiagra gear set or not?

Hi Arun.

It’s a good bike at a great price. I’m not sure if it will be “obsolete” or just up-dated. This is not important anyway, the point is that it works well and should last you a good length of time. I have Campagnolo Record on my Time frame, both are obsolete now, but it’s the best bike I’ve ever ridden and the same goes for my camera and lap-top, both were out of date by the time I got them home from the shop, so don’t worry about it, if it’s a good bike (and it is), just buy it and ride it and enjoy.

The Giant Defy 1.

The frame is built with aluxX SL aluminium tubes which are shaped for extra strength and rigidity and they look good too! This is a well designed and manufactured frame that should ride well with comfort and a sharp performance. The Giant compact design is well known and now copied by nearly all frame builders these days. The front end of the bike is particularly solid with its inch and a quarter to inch and an eighth aluminium steerer and the fatter top and down tubes where they connect to the head tube and the straight fork blades.

The tight back end will also give you solid feel with the small rear triangle giving less flex. The other tubes tapper into the seat tube and give the bike a very sleek look.

Get the bike and tell us how it goes?
