Good cog distribution for a 10 speed cassette

I've got a 12-23 Ultegra cassette, but not sure if this is the good distribution. I've noticed that a smaller cog would help me to get good top speed on flat, and specially downhills. What do you recommend?

Makus, thanks for your first guest post. Please consider registering here.

Regarding to your question, well like everything in life it depends on much factors. I write my example:

When I purchased my bike, it came with a compact crankset 50-34 and a cassette of 12-23. It was good but not great for triathlons. I needed a smaller cog of 11, so I replaced it by 11-23. Now I've got the perfect cogs distribution for training uphills with 34-25 and racing with 50 – x.

PS. I'm thinking on replacing it by 11-28 because I'll be doing a lot of hill training.

It depends ;) makus

I've replaced today my 11-23 cassette with the following sprocket distribution:

11-12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23

by an 11-25 with:

11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-23-25

I hope these will be enough for my upcoming hilly training Confused

Makus, in theory, an 11t will help you to go faster only if you have the legs for it. It will take more watts to move. You should use it and let the road tell you what you need. This is what my gear calculator tells me.
50/11 @ 90 rpm = 32 mph or @100 rmp = 35.7 mph
50/12 @ 90 rpm = 29.5 mph or @100 rmp = 32.2 mph

So basically, 50/12 @ 100 rpm is faster than 50/11 @ 90 rmp.

I replaced 12-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25
with 12-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27

I am looking into some steep hills in April, some 16-22%.
In front I have 50-39-30

I should have said that as a 56 years old, I am starting to feel more and more attracted to "granies". So, yes Sam, triple in the front.

I'm use to ride with "granies" as well, and they are sometimes stronger than others within group Surprised
