Which Tires and Computer?

Mo has two questions for us; he is using Bontrager X Lite tires and wants our recommendations on other tire brands as he will soon have to replace his present rubber. His second question is that he is also thinking of fitting the Shimano flight deck computer but, wants our in put on the Shimano set up and which other speedometers we like

Question: Hello,
Like your site. Very informative and helpful. I have two questions:

1. What road bike tires would you recommend for someone who is into serious training? I currently ride the Bontrager X Lite AC which I like but need to soon change and have heard that continental, Michelin and Hutchinson are better? Your advice on the specific brand and exact type would be appreciated?

2. I am thinking about getting a shimano flight deck speedometer. What do you think about it and what other speedometers would you recommend? Thanks for your help.

Hi Mo,

Glad you find the site helpful; can you get out on your bike at this time of year in Switzerland?

New Tires

Your first question is a little difficult to answer exactly; this is because we have found that different tires can be better in different areas, due to the different road surfaces all over the world. I used to always use Michelin Pro slick tires, they felt good, road securely and seemed to last a fair length of time. I then moved to a more hilly area and a different country and the Michelin's didn't last very long, so I changed to Continental, which were nice, but in the end I have stayed with Hutchinson Fusion Comp as they are light, perform well and don't wear out to fast. I used to always like Vitoria tires, but they are not what they used to be since they moved production to Thailand.

Hutchinson Fusion

It's best to ask other riders in your area what they find best for your roads and go with there suggestions, there is nothing wrong with Bontrager tires, but it's good to try some others.

Shimano Flight Deck

Polar
Question two; the Shimano Flight Deck does much more than many other speedometers when its connected to your Shimano shifter, its will tell you your speed and distance and all the usual stuff and also which gear you are in and a cadence display without a crank sensor. Of all the other bike computers we like Polar the best as they tell you your heart rate and all the other data you need, depending on which model you buy.

I hope we have helped you again and I hope its not snowing too much.
