Weight Distribution

Ben has a tricky question about the distribution of weight on the bike, we know that weight saving on the wheels is a big advantage, but he wants to know what is the effect on the bike of top and bottom weight distribution. All very interesting?

Question:
What is the affect of weight distribution towards the top of the bike versus toward the bottom of the bike? I know that rolling weight is more important than static weight, but what about the top/bottom distribution of static weight?

Hi Ben,

Yes weight saving on the wheels, even of a small amount, is quite noticeable. Buy lighter handlebars or saddle and you won't notice much of anything. Smaller riders, whose weight is lower to the ground, tend to be able to corner more sharply and can change direction a bit quicker. If you are asking about the difference a heavy saddle compared to a heavy rear derailleur then you would not notice anything. When it comes to static parts then comfort or proper function are much more important.

Does this answer your question, Ben?
