Look and Koga Miyata Bikes

Mo lives in Switzerland and recently asked us about replacing his tires and what we thought about the Shimano Flight Deck bike computer system, which you can read all about. He now wants our views on Koga Miyata bikes and the Look 481 carbon frame. His problem is that he needs a 66 cm frame, BIG!!

Question: Thanks for your feedback on tires and speedometer. The weather here has been snow for the last few days, which is not ideal for road biking. Two more questions:

1. What is your view on Koga Miyata road bikes? They seem to be the only ones out there who make road bikes up to 66cm?

2. What about the LOOK 481 road frame in carbon? Thanks.

Hi again Mo,

Yea cycling in the snow on a road bike probably isn't the best thing to do, now on a mountain bike with big chunky tires it can be great fun, until you fall off!

Koga-Miyata

Koga Miyata used to make some very nice frames in Holland, beautifully constructed and as I remember the paint finish was very good, the Skil-Shimano European Pro team uses Koga-Miyata frames and one of their riders won the mountains jersey in the 2008 Paris-Nice stage race.

Koga Roadwinner

These days Koga make bikes for every cycling category, from road race to electric bikes and everything in between. The road section uses different materials, carbon, aluminum 7005 and the lightest Scandium tubing.

Koga Flyer

You are looking at a 66 cm frame, so it must be an aluminum 7005 as that is the biggest that they manufacture. There are four models that are based on this frame; the Flyer Tiagra, the Flyer 105, the Roadwinner Ultegra and the Roadwinner 105. the frame is made from TIG welded tapered triple butted 7005 aluminum and carbon and alloy forks on the Flyer and full carbon on the Roadwinner. Both frames are very well built with beautifully smooth welding and a great paint job. The geometry of the 66 cm frame is as you would expect is big, it has 73 degree seat and head tube angles and all the other tubes are well proportioned to suit a taller rider. So yea, they are good bikes.

Look 481

The Look 481 is made for comfort with its laid back angles and that comfortable carbon ride. The 481 has been around for a while, but it is a classic carbon frame that is perfect for races and especially long rides. The HSC5SL forks are well matched to the frame as they are multi-shaped, much like the frame tubes. Look make very nice frames and the 481 is one of their best, if you can get one in your size I would go for it as they are stiff where you want it and comfortable at the same time.

I hope this helps again, Mo?
