Ananda wants our advice on wheels. We always say that the best way to improve the handling and performance of your bike is to spend money on new wheels. Ananda wants reliable and cheap, which isn't an easy job, but we have a very good suggestion as the where the best place to look might be.
Question:
Looking for a new front wheel to replace the Alex AS1 rims and Vitoria tires (700c) that is low cost but reliable, durable, stiff, and long-lasting for both long rides and short fast racing. I've tried a few brands (Mavic, Shimano), but everything is so expensive. What kinds of wheels would be good replacement on a specialized sequoia and does it really make a difference outside of a few extra grams of rotating weight. I'm mainly looking for durability, reliability and comfort without sacrificing too much weight.
Hi Ananda,
Wheels are the best way to improve your bike, put a light pair of wheels in your bike, and they don't have to be much lighter than the ones you have, and you will notice a difference.
Can you tell me about hand-mades ?
A shop here in CAmbridge says I need
one to replace my wobbling rear wheel.
I'm in sticker shock, since
I expected to merely have my wheels balanced. Instead I'm looking at $125
for the "hand-made" wheel and multiple
servicing costs; $325 total for my old
Raleigh bike.
Best,
Jay
