Computer Cadence Sensor Placement

Shaun has fitted a cadence sensor to his bike to use with his ECR 2 wireless computer, his problem is that he has to move the magnet to near the end of the crank, up at the pedal end, but leaves his sensor too far away from the computer head and he is worried about getting a correct reading of his pedal revs. This is our suggestion on what he should do

Question: Hi Samuel,

I just have a query about the fixing of my cadence sensor, i have just purchased the echo ecr2 wireless computer and have hooked it up on the right side of my handle bars.

The problem that i have is with the placement of the magnet, as my crank arm has a sort of hollow i have had to place it up close to my pedal which has put the position of the sensor further away from the computer.

The instructions say that it must be placed within 700mm of the computer, my placement is roughly 780mm. I am still receiving rpm's and would just like to know if it still remains accurate at that distance? Thankyou.

Hi Shaun,

Your problem is easily answered as moving the sensor for the cadence will bring it closer to your computer. You must have the sensor on the chain stay, so if the magnet is near the pedal then the sensor is further away and as you say possibly out of reach of the computer head.

I suggest that you place the sensor on the down tube of the frame, instead of the chain stay, this will bring the sensor up near the bottom of the bottle cage, so bringing it a lot nearer the computer head unit and not affecting the accuracy of the pedal rev reading.

If it works as it is it should be accurate, you can always check it by counting your revs and making sure it is OK. When you fit the wheel magnet it can be in placed at the best position for the speed sensor on the fork, it doesn't matter where you put the magnet and sensor as it and the cadence sensor count each time it passes and the computer knows the size of your wheel and from that it works out your distance and speed, so the sensor position isn't a problem. I hope this all helps?
