A New Bike for a New Rider

Joe is just starting out and wants to know which bike he should be spending his money on? He has a fancy for a Trek 1.5 and he wants our thoughts on whether it will suit his needs. We have taken a guess at what he wants and taken a look at the Trek

Question: Looking to get a road bike. Haven't done a lot of riding but was looking to get into it quite seriously. Was looking at a trek 1.5 08 which seemed pretty good from looking around. Unfortunately my knowledge on the subject not great so any other suggestions for bikes would be great.

Hi Joe,

The Trek 1.5 is a very sporty bike indeed and at a great price. Bontrager wheels and cranks mated to Shimano Tiagra and Sora gears, the frame is made of Alpha Black Aluminum and the forks are carbon Bontrager race. Most of the other bits are also from Bontrager which is all good stuff, not too expensive. The frame design is slightly sloping with sensible geometry for speed and comfort, the head set is hidden making the frame look sleek and sporty, it's a well thought out bike that look better than it's price would tell you it was.

Trek 1.5

I would say it's a great bike to start with, if you are happy and enjoy your road cycling then you can look to up grading and spending more money. Get used to cycling and take it from there and enjoy it!

An aluminum frame might be too stiff a ride for someone just getting into serious riding.

Velocipedi Garozzo
Hi,

I Think I need your help;
I have found a vintage road/race Bike in a Chikens Cage, on a farm at Lima, Peru., I bought it ( The bike plus twenty years of chikens shit covering it) by US$ 4.00. I would like to restore the bike, but I can not find info about, It is a "Velocipedi Garozzo" (Italian of course), with Campagnolo / Magistroni acc. looks like early 60s because derrailes (Campagnolo grand sport) has metal round wheels whitout teeth. Frame was originally Chrome plated (now rusted).

If someone has or knows some info/pictures about "Garozzo" I will thank you so much

Regards

Carlos

Maintaining Ksyrium ES
I was talking to my local bike shop and they recommneded that every 20 hours or so I dismantle the freewheel of the Ksyrium ES and lubricate the nylon bush.

CAn you help explain how to do this?

new bike
I think I would not buy an aluminum bike but try to find a vintage steel bike. Unless you have smooth rodes, the aluminum bike can beat you up, especially if you weigh under 175 pounds.

A New Bike for a New Rider
I am starting with the assumption that you have decided this bike fits the type of riding that you want to do(racing, touring, recreational riding, etc.). That being said, ride it, ride one model up and compare, is the extra cost worth it to you? Trek makes excellent bikes and they have made a lot of good updates for 2008, I took advantage of that myself.
