ML lives on the coast of New England and wants a bike that can stand up to a regular beach ride and all the sand and salt. We give our thoughts on this probably unwise daily trip and the best way to undertake this corrosive journey
Question:
I'm interested in which bikes are good for riding through sand. I live in coastal New England and want to commute to my rowing class 5 miles away. I'd be riding through beach parking lots and behind sand dunes part of the way. Is there a specific derailleur I should look for? Thanks so much.
Hi ML,
The answer to your question is that there are no bikes that are good for riding through sand or on the beach as salty sea water will corrode every part of the bike. If you intend to get a bike and ride it along the beach you need to wash it every time you use it and get rid of all the salt and sand.
No bikes are good in sand, but one with the least amount of moving parts would be best, so a single gear bike with "V" brakes has the least amount of bits to go rusty. A cheap, old second hand bike that you are not worried about would be best if you are not bothered about cleaning it regularly.
So cheap bike and a good clean after each ride, this is the same as the bike that riders use in the winter in wet areas, they don't use their good bike as it wont last long, get something that you don’t mind replacing after a short time.
