Harold has bought a new full suspension bike and has gone from a 16" to a 20" frame size, will this cause him problems? Maybe or maybe not! Read on to find out.
Hi,
I am upgrading from a hardtail to full suspension mtb. The frame size is 16".
I just purchased a full suspension bike with a frame size of 20". So far, I have not had any problems with back nor wrist/hand pain from the larger frame. Other than the crotch clearance being less than normal, should I be overly concerned about the larger frame?
Sincerely,
Harold
Follow up to initial question on Frame Size. I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam.
Thanks once again,
Harold
Hi Harold,
Thanks for your two e-mails, the easy answer to your questions is "if you are happy, dont worry about it".
Basically if your position is about the same as your old bike it shouldnt cause you any pain.
The crotch clearance could be a cause for concern, but a fall on to the top tube with the "family jewels" on any size of frame is going to hurt! Take note of the length of the bike also, it maybe that there isnt much difference, so no problems there.
Also this being a full suspension frame, depending on how soft you ride, your position is changing all the time and it being more comfortable there is less chance of back and hand/wrist discomfort.
As I said before if you are happy, just get on with it and enjoy your bike.
