Crank set Compatibility?

Neil in Toronto has put his hands on a set of FSA carbon cranks for his son’s bike. His question is whether or not the crank set will work with his Campagnolo gear set up?

Question:
I got a great deal on a FSA carbon crank set. I’m building a new racing bike for my son. My question is..Will this crank set work with Campagnolo derailleur & chain? I’m going to set up the bike with 10 speed Campy Centaur.

Hi Neil.

The simple answer is yes, but there are a couple of things you should look for.

As you are planning on using 10 speed you must check that it is a 10 speed chain set that you have bought. If the chain set is only a 9 speed then the chain will not sit well on the teeth, also the gap between the chain rings will also be slightly too wide giving you a bad gear change and there is the possibility of the chain getting stuck between the chain rings when you shift up or down.

If you have bought the crank set second hand then check that the teeth are not worn, if they look a little hooked then they have been well used and the chain rings will need to be replaced which can cost as much as a new set of complete cranks and rings.

If all is OK then it will work fine. Good luck and we hope your son enjoys what sounds like a great bike.
