Which Lighter Wheels for an Addict?
Stephen Lacey has a very nice Scott Addict and he wants to spend a bit of money on some light wheels. We are not sure which equipment he is running so we have listed our favorite Shimano and Campagnolo wheel sets. There are lots of wheels to choose from, so we have only looked at the best
Question:
I have a Scott Addict R2 with a very high overall specification. I have some spare cash and would like to upgrade some part of the bike. With Mavic Ksyrium ES 18 front/20 rear rims, I thought better wheels might be a good idea but I don’t know what type of wheel would make a substantial improvement. Can you please advise?
Regards
Stephen Lacey
Hi Stephen,
So you have a Scott Addict, very nice, I think my next frame (if I can afford one!) will be an Addict, except Scott will bring something new and lighter out by then!
Your wheels are very good, but you could save some weight in that department and as we know any weight saving in the wheels are worth a lot more than anywhere else on the bike. You could either go for very light alloy or I think you could go for some wheels with carbon rims. I guess you have Shimano Dura-Ace on your Addict, if so then I would go for either Shimano carbon Dura-Ace wheels, either the 24/28 mm carbon rim or the very deep section 50 mm, if you prefer alloy then the Dura-Ace aluminum wheel set which takes clincher, tubular and tubeless. All are light and will look great with your Scott and will work perfectly with all your other Shimano equipment.
Now if you have Campagnolo equipment, my choice would be either carbon Campagnolo Bora Ultra for tubulars, they have a 50 mm deep carbon rim and a total weight of 1305 grams or if you want alloy then my choice would be the Campagnolo Shamal Ultra, which can be in tubular or clincher and they have a weight of 1395 grams.
The Campagnolo Hyperon Ultra have a shallow clincher carbon rim and hub and have a great weight at only 1350 grams, they are not cheap, but they are nearly as sexy as the Bora Ultra. We also like Fulcrum Racing Light wheel set for clinchers, alloy hubs and carbon rims and weigh in at 1375 grams and are Campagnolo and Shimano compatible. So those are our choices.
