What is Monocoque?

Gilbert obviously has an interest in carbon frames and he wants to know what we mean when we talk about a carbon frame that has been manufactured with the monocoque method. We explain the differences

Question:

What does monocoque mean?

Hi Gilbert,

A monocoque carbon frame has been made in one piece, that is to say the tubes have been connected by wrapping everything with layers of carbon weave. This gives the frame a smooth, one piece look to the joints.

The other method looks more like the old fashioned way that steel and alloy tubes where joined and that is with the tubes being connected with a system of lugs. Both methods are strong and solid with very little flex, your choice in this case could come down to the looks of the frame.

Does this answer you question, Gilbert?
