What About the Wilier Izoard?

Craig want our opinion on the Isoard road bike from Wilier of Trestina in Italy, it’s a top class full carbon frame. Wilier had stopped making the Isoard a few years ago, but has reintroduced the name on a new carbon offering for 2008 and we are happy to run our eye over such a nice bike

The new for 2008 all carbon Wilier Izoard is one of the nicest looking bike around, but there is more to it than looks, so we don’t mind having a good look at one for you. The Izoard comes with different group sets and wheels or you buy it as a frame only option, we will first take a look at the carbon frame set.

The Wilier Izoard Frame

Wilier made the Izoard very successfully before for European top teams and now it has returned as a full carbon set up. Based on the more expensive, Le Roi, it fits in as a race bike or a very good bike to roll out at the weekend with your mates for a good ride.

The Izoard frame comes in six sizes and has hand laid 6K carbon weave and finished superbly, the back end has a springy rear triangle, but still solid enough for precise handling and rigid response. The full carbon monocoque frame has wishbone sloping rear seat stays for comfort and oversize chain stays and down tube for the stiffness. Talking of stiffness it also has a mono box bottom bracket and internal one and an eighth headset.

The geometry is fairly standard for a slopping top tube design, a mixture of comfort and ajility, not too steep but with just the right dimensions for most riders. One of the main aspects of the Izoard has to be its reasonable price.

The Complete Wilier Izoard Bike

I’ve looked around and it seems you can have an Izoard built up with any group set you want, but Campagnolo looks to be the main equipment. All the group sets look to be available for fitting along with Fulcrum wheels, which is a great combination as really they are both Campagnolo. Saddles from Selle Italia, handle bars and stems from ITM and the carbon seat post is from Ritchey. I’ve also seen Shimano kitted frames with Mavic Ksyrium wheels, FSA carbon seat post, Pro Vibe bars and stem, all this equipment can not be faulted.
