Our sixteen year old is just getting into mountain biking trails with a friend's family. He is 6'1" and I know nothing about what type of bike to purchase him?? Suggestions? We are in Florida and the trails are moderate in difficulty. What should I look for and know?

What's best for combining paved with hard-packed dirt roads (no trails, gravel, or roots): cyclocross, hybrid, flat bar, or ???. Essentially, where the family sedan can be driven.I'm looking for a bicycle that takes a tire between fat and thin, for about $1000-1200.
