Single Gear?
Joo Mong Lee has written to us before on a few different subjects, this time he want confirmation on what he should do about his gearing. We try to help with suggestions on his chain wheel set up and also his cassette. He needs a higher gear that is for sure
Question: Hi,
When weather permits, I would cycle my road bike 23 kilometers to work, and then back home, using 52T chain wheel with 14T cassette almost all the way seated.
Do you recommend next replacement bike be single speed with such gear ratios?
Thanks,
Lee Joo Mong
Hi again Joo,
Maybe not a single speed, but you do need to change to a cassette that starts at a 12 tooth sprocket at the back and maybe if you are finding that you are under geared and spinning too much then consider a 54 tooth chain wheel at the front. If you never go anywhere that you would need an inner chain wheel then you could go for a single chain set, but you never know that one day you might need that lower gear and finding a single isn’t always easy as they can be hard to buy. It definitely sounds like you need to have higher gears on your bike; it must be very flat where you live.
I hope we have helped again Joo?
