Shimano Ultegra Chain Set and New Tires

rer mariano has asked us two questions, the first is to do with changing his chain set, we don’t think he can do this and we explain why. He also wants our advice on replacing his tires for some that are more suitable for riding the road

Question: Sir,

I would like to ask you a question regarding my bike. I have a TREK hardtail MTB with a ‘07 XT components(fd & rd derailleur, cranks 48/36/26 teeth, rapidfire shifters) & Megarange sprocket. I’m planning to change my cranks to ULTEGRA Triple ring (52/39/30teeth) & replacing my tires to Panaracer 26 X 1.25 tires. now, most of the time I’m just riding on the road. I want more speed. Please give me advise, if this is possible. Thank you very much. your quick response will be much appreciated. God bless.

Hi rer mariano,

I guess you are trying to make your mountain bike more like a road bike, well the bad news is that its probably not possible to fit a Shimano Ulterga chain set to your Trek mountain bike, the Trek will be wider at the bottom bracket and also the chain stays will normally be thicker also. The cranks of a road bike are closer together so this probably isn’t an option I’m sorry to tell you. To make sure ask you bike shop. Your other option is to try and find a larger chain ring to fit your existing chain set.

Michelin XCR

Your tires are an easier answer, for the road there are quite a few tires to choose from, my personal choice is the Michelin XCR Road tire for use on mountain bike size wheels, they are slick, smooth and fast, every thing you need of riding on the road. Look around and ask at your local shop what they use as they have the knowledge of your area and should know what is best.
