The Shimano and Campagnolo Mix

Reg has asked us an old question, will Shimano and Campagnolo go together, just like any marriage some mixes are possible, like men and women, Campagnolo and Shimano are different, but can get on together, sometimes, on other occasions, its impossible

Question: I have a Peugeot chorus with campy equipment & indexing rear derailleur. Will shimano sora 7 spd shifter/brake lever f/triple/set item #ls-6333dl work as an up grade to my shifting.

Hi Reg.
Since Shimano came on the market everyone has been trying to mix it with Campagnolo and other manufacturers, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Before indexed gears were invented there was no problem, or very little. With indexing the spacing between the sprockets was different for the two companies and also different for 6, 7, 8 and 9-cogged cassettes. Now with 10 speed the spaces are the same (very similar) and are mostly interchangeable with the cassette on any system, the problem is that the pull on the gear leaver to the rear derailleur is different, so you have to stick with Shimano leavers and Shimano rear derailleur and Campagnolo with Campagnolo.

For your set up, Reg, I would doubt very much if it would work, mixing a set of Shimano 7 speed shifters with a Campagnolo Chorus rear derailleur, so don’t waste your money on that as a upgrade. If you want my advice I would save up and replace the whole shifter/drive train set-up with some more up to date equipment and stick to the same manufacturer through out, specially if you are considering putting on a triple chain set as this adds more complications. Happy cycling.
