Rim Eyelets?
George has a smart set of DT Swiss wheels, but he has heard that there is a problem with the spokes pulling through the rim as it was made with a single eyelet. He needs to know how to tell the difference between single and double eyelets. Here is how to tell
Question:
I just bought a set of DT Swiss RR 1450 mon Chasseral. Some of the reviews I’ve read are complaints about spokes getting pulled out because they use a single eyelet. They’ve since changed it to a double eyelet. I’d like to know if I’m getting single or double eyelets. What do I look for? How can I tell a single eyelet from a double eyelet rim?
Hi George,
The single eyelet is not as strong as the double eyelet as the single eyelet is usually just some strengthening around the spoke hole and the spoke can pull through the rim or the stress of the tension of the spoke an cause cracks in the rim which will eventually cause the rim to fail, which could be dangerous.
If you look at the inside of the rim there should be an extra piece of metal that runs from the out side face of the rim through the rim to the inner face of the rim, this is a double eyelet. The single eyelet only has either thicker metal at the spoke hole or has a proper eyelet around the spoke hole, I hope that helps?
