More Training and a New Bike, Possibly a Giant?
Joe Pettis has been doing more training and wants to get a bike for long rides and maybe a bit of racing, he also wants to eat what he wants, so training to allow this is going to be very important. We give him some training tips and suggestions to what bikes he should be looking at
Hi Joe,
Good for you, you have started training the proper way, now is the time to step it up. You need to be training four to five days a week and try to lengthen your rides to 30 miles a day, with one or two longer rides a week of 50 miles. Build up to this slowly doing a little more every day, you will notice a big difference with your fitness.
As to what bike you should get, there are a lot out there, as you know. I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but you are not very tall, which limits what you can buy, a little. A friend of mine is about your height, maybe a little shorter and he has had two Giants, in the Compact design and a Cannondale, all in the smallest sizes and he loves them all.
With the Giants he could have quite a lot of seat pin showing and a normal size stem, so the bike looked to have normal proportions, but was quite small, it’s up to you if you can afford Carbon or Alloy.

If you don’t want to spend too much on equipment then Shimano 105 is very reliable, if you can afford a little more then Ultegra or Campagnolo Chorus is a little lighter and harder wearing, for the money you wouldn’t notice too much difference between the groups unless you were changing from 105 to Dura-Ace, it is smother running and lighter, but a lot more expensive.
Have a look at Giant or Cannondale, both very good bike and get the best you can afford, let us know how you get on with your training and bike purchase.
