Shimano and Campagnolo Mix
Fabrice le Bourhis has wheels with a Shimano hub, but has a bike with Campagnolo gears, the question is “is it possible to mix?” Here is our answer:
Question:
I have a Swordfish wheelset mounted with Shimano hub and my groupset is Campagnolo centaur 10 speed so no mix as you already no….so I was wondering if you could kindly tell me what kind of cassette would I need to mix the two. Thank you for your time.
Hi Fabrice,
Mixing Shimano and Campagnolo is never a good idea as the gears usually don’t work very well. Your problem is that you have a Shimano hub which will be fitted with a Shimano cassette body which will only take a Shimano cassette. You have three options; the first is by far the easier.
Because you are using 10 speed you might get away with running a Campagnolo gear set-up with a Shimano cassette as the spacing is nearly the same. This will not work with 9 speeds or less as they have a much different spacing between the cogs.
You could use separate cogs with Campagnolo spacers, but then this is not so easy as they are difficult to find.
Try to find a Campagnolo cassette body to fit your hub, these are very thin on the ground and not easy to find.
So, try a Shimano cassette or buy another pair of wheels!
