Disc Brake Advice On GT Avalanche
Maria has two GTs and has had them long enough that the disc brakes need adjustment, not knowing which brakes are fitted makes it a little difficult to answer her problem but we think we can give her a few pointers to sort things out
Question: I wonder if you can help us, we purchased two GT Avalanche bikes earlier in the year, with disc brakes, which now seem to need some adjusting could you please let me know where I can get the required info as to adjustment and replacement of discs ‘how to’.
Thank you for your assistance.
Maria Weeks.
Hi Maria,
I hope you are happy with your GT Avalanche bikes; there are four different Avalanche bikes in the GT range and without knowing which ones you have it makes it a bit difficult to say exactly what adjustments you need. The Avalanche Expert has the hydraulic Avid Juicy 3 disc system, this is a very good set up but can be a bit fiddly, probably best to leave hydraulics to the experts down at the local bike shop, the brake pads can be adjusted, this is usually done by screws on the side of the brake calliper, you should check the instructions that came with the bike. The other three GT Avalanche bikes that have disc brakes all use Tektro, the Avalanche 3.0 uses a cable controlled disc brake, which adjusts much like any cable brake, you just tighten the cable at the clamp.
To replace the disc is fairly easy, take the wheel out and you’ll see it just bolts on to the hub, just take the bolt out and replace the disc, remembering to make sure the bolts are nice and tight when you are finished.
Disc brakes are a little more complicated, but basically you have to centre the pads on the disc and make sure the cable is tight or that the reach is comfortable for you, I hope this helps, but remember you local bike shop will be more than happy to do any adjustments.
I hope this all helps?
