Changing the Front Derailleur Clamp?
Giovanni Francisca wants to know if it is possible to change the size of the clamp on his front derailleur as I guess he has a new frame with a larger diameter seat tube. This is not an impossible thing to change if you have a bolt on clamp, but not all are like this.
Question:
I was wondering if it is possible to change the clamps on a front derailleur to fit a bigger tube; from31.8mm – 34.9mm?
Hi Giovanni,
This is a tricky one! The answer is yes and no, it depends on which front derailleur you have? If your front gear changer has a built in clamp then it isn’t possible to change the clamp. If you have a separate clamp and a front derailleur that can fix to a frame bracket then you can buy a different sized clamp which clamps to the frame and then the front derailleur bolts to the clamp as if it was fixed to the frame.
If you can change the clamp then go for an alloy one, there are some that are carbon look-alike, but tend to be slightly flexible and don’t give a great gear change. Front derailleurs are not too expensive so if you have to buy a new one it shouldn’t break the bank.
