Campagnolo or X Lite Wheels?

Brett Gunter has heard some different views on the X Lite wheels and so have we, so we suggest some other wheel sets that should suit Brett. He also likes the look of Campagnolo, so we suggest two wheel sets form Campagnolo, Fulcrum and three from Mavic. These are our recommendations

Question: hello Sam,

looking for some wheels for my 07′ madone to upgrade with I like the wheels I have but want lighter wheels and I’m thinking of race x lite or some campy wheels, I’ve heard mixed reviews on the race x lite and would like more input on both the campy and race x lite wheels. I’m 6’1″ and 180lbs, like to climb. Need a stiff durable and strong lite wheel. Thanks

Hi Brett,

Yes, I too have read those mixed views on X Lite wheels, this not a good sign. I would say have a good look at the Campagnolo wheels, they are dependable and, depending on which you buy, they are also light. One of the staff writers has Campagnolo wheels and they have lasted along time without any problems. I have a few different wheel sets, but I know I can rely on my Mavic Ksyrium, they have never caused me any problems, and here are our recommendations:

Campagnolo

Campag Eurus

You have a large choice from the Italian manufacturers; I would suggest you look at the Eurus, which is reasonably priced, very stylish and strong. Different rim widths and very distinctive spoke patterning on the rear wheel, also with straight pull spoke design and no inner spoke holes, so no need for a rim tape.

If you want to spend a little less the Zonda wheel set is a cheaper alternative, different rim sizes front and back, G3 spoke pattern on the rear and radial on the front. Quite light at 1,610 grms.

Fulcrum

Fulcrum Racing 1

Fulcrum Racing 1 are the best Alloy wheel set that they build. Butted spokes, more on the gear side on the rear wheel and radial on the front, they are specially balanced to level out the weight of the joint and they use oversize hubs.

The Fulcrum Racing 3 don’t cost as much as the Racing 1′s and are very similar to the 1′s, except with the bearings that some are not cartridge and the weight is a little bit more.

Mavic

Mavic Ksyrium SL

The Mavic Ksyrium SL or ES are both about the same price and are very dependable, radial and cross spoke patterns, strong rims with different sizes front and rear. Aluminum axles and alloy, bladed spokes make these wheels a great buy. The Ksyrium Elite are much cheaper and also good.

Our choice; either Campagnolo Eurus or Mavic Ksyrium ES.
