Can you Change from a 30mm Bottom Bracket?

Jeff has a Cannondale bike with a 30mm bottom bracket shell and he wants to know if he can change it for a “normal” size and threaded bottom bracket with FSA cranks. We have a look at this problem and try to come up with the answers

Question:
Can a set of FSA cranks be simply inserted into the Cannondale 30mm BB my current BB houses a set of Cannondale Si Carbon cranks (recently cracked) or is there some conversions required?
Jeff.

Hi Jeff,

This is a slightly tricky problem and the answer depends on the age and which Cannondale you have. The best thing to do is to remove the bottom bracket, which you probably have already done, and feel inside the shell, if there are threads then you can probably screw in a British threaded bottom bracket which is 1.37 x 24.

If the bottom bracket is smooth inside then an adapter is needed for the “normal” bottom bracket to screw in to. You will be getting out board bearings I guess, or if you are buying FSA then they also manufacture a 30 mm bottom bracket set up, this would be an easy option.

Ask at your Cannondale dealer if he has or can get the adapters for your bike, otherwise go for the FSA 30mm version and away you go.
