All sportsmen/women now what it's like to get hungry and to get the "knock" or the "bonk". When this happens you get weak, those pedals are so heavy, your head gets light and you can't stay with the pack. It can happen to anyone and anytime, but normally to the under trained or those who have not prepared properly for either a hard ride or an event.

Cycling didn't used to have anything like this, yes there were Randonee's (or Audax), but they were more like bicycle touring events, that you are not allowed to ride too fast or you can be disqualified, but now you can ride Sportif's (in French), Marcha's (in Spanish), Fondo's (in Italian) or what ever they are called where you live.
